Introduction To Our Practice
Oral and maxillofacial surgery requires additional years of hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school. Dr. Kim also went to Keck School of Medicine at USC after graduating dental school to obtain his medical degree and to augment his knowledge in order that he may treat complex oral and facial problems. His training also included one-year in General Surgery at LAC+USC Medical Center.
As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Kim manages a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth, facial, and neck regions. Dr. Kim practices a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from dental implant surgery and wisdom tooth removal to corrective jaw surgery. This also includes techniques designed to rebuild bone structure with minimal surgical intervention and optimal patient comfort. Our office can also diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries, and fractures.
3-D Digital Planning
Dr. Kim utilizes digital planning to ensure the highest accuracy possible in facial and oral surgeries. Many procedures that were traditionally performed outside the mouth can now be performed inside the mouth making the surgery virtually scarless. This is made possible by having a cone beam scanner (more info here) which significantly reduces radiation exposure when compared to traditional CT scanners.
Dr. Kim also utilizes a laser in his practice. The laser has been utilized in hospital setting for years and recent advances have made it possible to use lasers in the office setting. The laser works by creating an invisible beam of high-intensity light that can cut and mold tissue in the mouth and facial areas with exceptional precision.
The Luxar NovaPulse System (more info here) can excise and vaporize tissue without the trauma and hospitalization and pain associated with procedures using traditional scalpels. Even for basic procedures, the use of a laser can provide less pain and faster healing for our patients.
The surgical staff at OC Oral & Facial Surgical Specialists are experienced, certified oral and maxillofacial surgical assistants, who assist in the administration of IV sedation and surgery. All staff are informed administrative personnel, well versed in health and insurance policies, and are CPR certified.
Our staff is also trained in assisting with intravenous (IV) sedation and outpatient general anesthesia in our state-of-the-art office setting. Patients are continuously monitored during and after surgery.
Dr. Kim is involved with academic teaching helping Head and Neck Surgical residents at UCI Medical Center. He also works with prospective dental students to help guide them in their careers.
Dr. Kim travels to Paraguay annually with his father for medical missions where he helps diagnose medical problems and provides oral surgical care.
